EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Join your peers in this interactive, LIVE virtual one-week workshop - designed specifically for school business officials seeking the prestigious designation of Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations (SFO). The five live webinars in this workshop will take place each day and will present the most recent updates to the professional school finance and operations domains. *If the recommended schedule (2-3 hours per day) doesn’t work with your schedule, no worries. You will have 120 days to complete the content in the workshop at your own pace. *CPE credits can only be earned by attending the live webinars for a minimum of 50 minutes and answering a minimum of three poll questions.

SESSION 1: Management of Accounting Systems and Functions

Monday, October 31, 2022 –12:00 PM to 1:00 PM ET

 

PRESENTER:

DESCRIPTION: 

This one-hour webinar session will review the topics of accounting systems and accounting functions. The presenter will provide a broad overview of accounting including organizational, procedural, and systematic elements of accounting. This includes maintaining software, upholding financial data integrity, administering the chart of accounts, analyzing account records, and recording district assets. The presenter will also discuss accounting functions ranging from payroll, billings, collections, and payments, to establishing procurement procedures, adhering to budget guidelines, preparing financial reports, and managing cash flows. This session will also cover the new updates to the accounting domains.

OBJECIVE 1: Examine how to utilize communications technology, internal controls, and proper documentation to prevent against fraud.

OBJECIVE 2: Identify methods used to manage payroll and personnel functions in the context of accounting, including salary, staffing needs, and benefits.

OBJECIVE 3: Discuss the process for managing accounts receivable and purchasing and procurement processes.

OBJECIVE 4: Examine the process for managing annual budgets, prepare financial reports, managing cash flow, managing activity accounts, and GASB standards.

SESSION 2: Management of Human Resource Functions and Management of Information Systems

Tuesday, November 1, 2022 –12:00 PM to 1:00 PM ET

DESCRIPTION:

An SFO’s proficiency doesn’t stop with district finances; an SFO must also be able to effectively manage information systems and human resource functions. In this one-hour session the presenter will review the essentials of human resources, including hiring compliance and best practices, compensation structure development, facilitating staff development and training programs, managing evaluation processes, personnel administration, and employee benefits. You’ll also get a robust overview of information system management, covering technology system development and needs assessments, system maintenance, and overseeing telecommunications systems.

OBJECTIVE 1: Identify the process used to recruit, hire, and onboard personnel.

OBJECTIVE 2: Examine ways to implement salary and benefit programs that can attract and retain employees.

OBJECTIVE 3: Identify the components used to assess successful district-wide hardware, software, and cloud computing requirements.

OBJECTIVE 4: Examine the process for implementing effective technology used for students and staff utilizing available funding sources.

OBJECTIVE 5: Discuss the importance of monitoring and updating existing policies and practices for technology management.

SESSION 3: Management of School Facilities and Risk Management Activities

This one-hour webinar will cover the topics of risk management and the management of school facilities. When it comes to risk management, all districts risk suffering loss or damage to their property, personnel, and reputation. Sound risk management practices can enable you to anticipate and limit these potential risks so that they cannot negatively affect your school district.  

When it comes to managing school facilities, it’s important to understand the effect of the environment on the learner. Factors such as adequate capacity, appropriate sound, light, and temperature as well as the design of space affect an individual’s ability to learn or to work. Effective and efficient facility management contributes to the educational process by providing the environment in which instructional programs are delivered. Expertise in areas such as facility planning, operations, and maintenance are competencies essential for school business officials.

OBJECTIVE 1: Examine common risks associated with school districts and how to maintain an effective the school risk management process.

OBJECTIVE 2: Identify the components of facility management and planning.

OBJECTIVE 3: Discuss best practices in facility maintenance and operations.

SESSION 4: Financial Planning, Budget Planning, and Analysis

DESCRIPTION:

School business practitioners are visionary leaders who can help others clearly see the future of the district through a comprehensive financial plan based on integrity and commitment to the educational mission. In order to inspire and motivate others to achieve a common goal, you’ll need to understand the trends of the community and the district to accurately forecast budget assumptions and assign resources to where they’re needed most. Dive into the details of financial planning, analysis, and budget reporting activities to accurately map out the fiscal year, evaluate data, and inform your stakeholders with clarity and transparency. This webinar session will also cover the new updates for this domain, previously referred to as the “Finance and Budget” domain.

OBJECTIVE 1: Examine the process for conducting financial planning and analysis through the linking of expenses to education outcomes, the development of short-and long-term financial goals, and the exploration of external funding sources.

While much of an SFO’s role encompasses financial areas that students may never know about, the transportation and food service areas are a crucial component of operations management, as both areas work directly to meet student needs. In this one-hour webinar session, you’ll learn what to consider for managing transportation and food services that best serve your students, as well as the state and federal regulations, accounting guidelines, and procedures required to help them run efficiently.

OBJECTIVE 1: Examine the role that ancillary services play in supporting education.

OBJECTIVE 2: Identify key factors in determining whether transportation and food service should be operated in-house or contracted.

OBJECTIVE 3: Discuss the role that federal and state regulations play in the provision of ancillary services.
